Northern Lights, aurora borealis, arsarnerit

The Northern Lights have been an enduring fascination throughout human history, captivating all who have been fortunate enough to witness their celestial ballet. Consequently, countries and cultures worldwide have woven their unique narratives and myths around this magnificent light display, which gracefully adorns the night skies in Earth’s northern and southern extremes.

Some cultures perceived these lights as the spirits’ guiding beacon for the recently departed souls, while others interpreted them as foreboding omens. In Greenland, the Northern Lights are known as “arsarnerit”, and local legend tells of the lights’ appearance when the spirits of the departed engage in a game of ball, using walrus skulls to while away time.

According to modern science, the Northern Lights materialize when electrically charged particles from the Sun collide with Earth’s atmosphere, disrupting magnetic fields. Regardless of the story you choose to embrace, the Northern Lights remain an enchanting experience that will etch itself into your memory forever.

In Ilulissat, you can experience the Northern Lights from the middle of September all the way through to the end of March.

Midnight sun

Summer in Ilulissat holds its own unique charm. As the snow momentarily releases its grip on the landscape, a new lease of life and boundless energy fills the air, fostering a sense of unity and togetherness. Come late May, the midnight sun takes its position in the sky, seamlessly blending day and night. Suddenly, taking a stroll at midnight or indulging in a mid-morning nap feels perfectly natural.

By the end of July, the sun makes way for the darker months, allowing the Northern Lights to once again grace the night skies come September.
